Salting Routes
Transport for Buckinghamshire salts a network of key roads, about 1375km (40%) of Buckinghamshire's total road network. These roads are known as precautionary routes and are treated whenever a decision is taken to grit.
These roads consist of all class A and B roads and some class C and Unclassified roads.
At times if salt stocks are low, these routes have to be reduced to a smaller network known as 'Snow Routes'.
Assessments
With such an extensive road network it would be unrealistic to attempt to treat all roads, so roads are prioritised based on several factors. Roads are assessed and scored on a point system. These criteria include:
• The importance of the route
• Use by other forms of transport including buses
• Route topography
• Collision record
• Adjacent key facilities
• Route accessibility
• Practicability
