Types of pedestrian crossings

• Zebra crossing - without traffic signals
• Puffin/pelican crossing - with traffic signals
• Toucan crossing - same as a pelican crossing but also for cyclists
• Pedestrian refuges - central island in the road 

Requesting a new crossing

• Anyone can request new crossing facilities. We also find accident sites that need new pedestrian facilities.
• Contact us on the number below or one of our area offices with location, possible solutions and any other relevant information. 

How is your request assessed?

We look at:

• Traffic data, e.g. accidents, speeds, vehicle and pedestrian flows
• Special local characteristics, eg presence of schools, hospitals, community centres
• Cycling/walking links (existing or planned) and communities divided by a busy road
