Recent advances in Light Emitting Diodes (LED) technology have seen an increase in available opportunities within the street lighting industry. With increased efficiency and life expectancy, LED's are seen as the way forward to help reduce maintenance costs, energy consumption and carbon emissions.
The purpose of this trial is to review the new technology that has become available and determine whether or not it is time to consider it as a viable alternative to conventional lighting methods.
The trial will involve replacing the existing street lights on a ‘one for one’ basis at the following locations within Aylesbury.
-
Tiverton Crescent, Quarrendon.
-
Mowbray Road, Elmhurst.
-
Kings Road, Queens Park.
-
Herston Close and Corfe Close, Bedgrove.
These four locations have been chosen primarily for the following reasons:
- Equipment and type of columns (concrete), which as a result of their age are due for replacement.
- Mix of residential streets (cul-de-sac/through road).
- Mix of communities.
- Mix of type and age of housing.
- Mix of electoral divisions.
The trial will run for three months from September to November and over this period other lighting options will also be trialled. The table below details these options and when they will be in use. Once the trial is over, the lighting will operate as it did before the trial started. This will be reviewed once feedback from the trial has been analysed.

To help determine the outcome of the trial, Transport for Buckinghamshire is seeking support from residents and other key stakeholders by asking them to complete before and after surveys. The first survey was delivered to residents in July and was seeking their opinion with regards the existing lighting in their street as well as their current views on the three lighting options listed above. A further survey will be delivered to residents in December. Surveys can be completed electronically by visiting our have you say page.
