In March 2009 we were awarded £4.55 million of Community Infrastructure Funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to implement the Urban traffic management centre (UTMC) scheme.
The scheme is an important element of our Aylesbury Transport Strategy. The scheme will provide better traffic management and monitoring capabilities across the town which will benefit residents and visitors.
The scheme will ensure Aylesbury’s future growth will be accomodated and will help to deal with congestion.
The information collected will be provided to you through the web, mobile phones, public information screens and variable message signs, so you can plan you journey using up to date information.

The UTMC scheme objectives are as follows:
• to support Primary Public Transport Corridors (PPTCs)
• to secure journey time reliability on Primary Congestion Management Corridors (PPMCs)
• to coordinate traffic signal control systems
• to collect real-time data on traffic and travel conditions
• to publicise traffic patterns to support travel choices
• to improve air quality
• to prioritise road capacity for public transport
• to make best use of the existing network
• to reduce travel times and delays
• to display dynamic car park information and travel information
Under the terms of the agreement with the HCA we must implement the scheme by the end of March 2011.
During 2009-10 progress has been made in the design and procurement of the central systems and on-street infrastructure required.
Throughout 2010-11 the system will be fully installed and linked up to the on-street infrastructure being installed over this period. A significant amount of testing will then take place to ensure the system is fully operational by March 2011.
Beyond 2011 coverage of the UTMC could be rolled out countywide. The central systems and control room will be in place and will be capable of processing data from across the county. This project offers the potential for significant further development over the course of the third local transport plan period in support of the plans long term goals.
The business case documents submitted to support this bid can be viewed below.
The following map shows details of the long term scheme proposals in Aylesbury. Please note that not all the elements may be installed in 2010-11. The proposals are subject to change as the design and procurement phases progress.

Project Update: Strategic Variable Message Sign installations
As part of the UTMC project objective to display dynamic travel information, we are about to embark on the installation of 13 strategic variable message signs (VMS) in and on the outskirts of Aylesbury. The signs will display live information on travel conditions in the town, and travel advice.
Below is an example of a VMS display. The signs can feature red and amber symbols and amber text to notify
drivers. Among other things the signs can warn of any road closures, delays, accidents, hazardous weather conditions and special events that could generate congestion.

Full details on the proposed locations of the VMS signs are shown in the PDF below. In addition to location plans, there are mocked up photos to give an impression of the appearance of the signs. In some instances the VMS installation will necessitate the relocation of an existing sign in that location.
