Surface dressing

We're working on it!

Surface dressing is a method of spraying the road with a coating of hot bitumen and then covering it with stone chippings. This then forms a water resistant, protective layer, which makes the road less slippery and extends its life.

TfB have now completed all the preparation works and are well into the programme of surface dressing for summer 2011. This work is part of the 'We're Working on It' programme which will also include more major resurfacing, smaller plane and patch areas.

Surface dressing is a resurfacing treatment for roads which prolongs its life and adds skid residence, making it a good road safety measure. Work can only be carried out in summer months when the weather is warmer.

The nature of the treatment means there will be loose chippings on the road surface until it beds down. The gangs will revisit the site at a later date to sweep way any remaining loose chippings. Until then, there will be temporary warning signs to alert drivers.

The full finalised programme is detailed below. Work will start on the 15th August and last for 3 weeks.
