The County Councils £25 million two year programme of road repairs has required the reallocation of important, but lower priority, Transport budgets, including £500,000 of capital originally intended to repair footways in 2011/12.
Through the recent meetings with members, it became apparent that there is a demand to fund a programme of footway capital works . Officers are currently assessing this, using the feedback received from Members and also technical data to evaluate the overall cost/benefit of such a programme of work.
It is worth pointing out, that in many cases the deterioration of the footways, although obvious, does not cause significant safety hazards and is more cosmetic in nature. Notwithstanding this, footway safety inspections will continue, as will safety repairs.
