 Responsible Authorities

You need to look after your property.  If your property is alongside a riverbank you are legally a riparian owner and have rights and responsibilities as explained in the Environment Agency’s Living on the Edge booklet.

Fire and Rescue have a duty only where there is a risk to life or a risk of fire. They have limited resources and there is often little they can do once the rescue phase is over - when a building is flooded and floodwaters are still high outside, there is no point in pumping water out.

Buckinghamshire County Council is responsible for routine emptying of highway gullies and emergency clearance of highway gullies and drainage when flooding occurs. If you think that flooding is being caused by a blockage inside a road gully report it here. In times of flooding, councils will try to provide assistance where it is considered most needed and if resources, circumstances and budgets permit.

Although new styles of flood protection products have been developed in recent years, sandbags can provide a defence against flood water. However, it is vital they are used correctly if they are to provide full benefit.  It is important to protect only the building rather than lining the perimeter of your land, as this reduces flood capacity and may cause further problems elsewhere.
